2018 BMW X3 M spied uncovered

BMW M division to roll out their first high-powered X3 soon. Back in June, BMW pulled the wraps off the third-generation X3 with the M40i serving as its most potent variant. Now, it appears that an all-out M division model for the crossover is now closer to reality. Our spies have snapped the X3 M with nearly no camouflage, showing off its high-performance credentials on the Nurburgring.

Like its sleeker sibling, the X4, it will be the first time the X3 will get the full M division treatment in its 13-year history. Exterior changes are typical of the in-house tuning division meaning unique front and rear bumpers, as well as a reshaped tailgate spoiler. Expect large corner air intakes at the front with more defined edges, as well as deeper front chin. As for the rear, it sees bolder, more defined creases near the exhaust pipes and the camouflage hides what seems to be a diffuser. The tailgate spoiler meanwhile extends further away from body, likely to aid in aerodynamics.

A closer look at the car reveals larger brakes on all four corners. Zoom in and one will see cross-drilled discs with six-pot calipers at the front and four-pot calipers at the rear. The wheel and tire combination is also more aggressive compared to its lesser-powered counterparts with its staggered arrangement. Also, it sits lower than the non-M models thanks to re-engineered suspension.

The engine for the X3 M have yet to be confirmed but our spies report that it will be using a revamped and re-tuned version of the one found in the M3 and M4. Dubbed the S58, it is a twin-turbocharged inline-six unit which is said to produce approximately 450 PS. Once the X3 M reaches production, it will go head to head against the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, Porsche Macan Turbo S and the upcoming Audi SQ5.
