2018 Lexus UX to shake up Philippine small crossover market

Another luxury crossover will soon be making its way in the Philippine market it seems. Upon checking the Lexus Philippines website, the entry-level luxury crossover is set to be coming soon to the country. First making its world debut at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show, the all-new Lexus UX will bring sophistication and class in the local small crossover segment.

Revealed in concept form during the 2016 Paris Motor Show, the UX serves as the brand’s littlest crossover and is aimed directly at the younger generation of car buyers. Featuring Lexus’s signature ‘L-Finesse’ design philosophy, the UX’s exterior is comprised of sharp lines, sleek shapes and muscular tones.

Dominating the front fascia is the distinct spindle grill that is complemented by angular headlights with LED daytime running lights. Meanwhile, the rear gets a long taillight strip that is made up of 120 LEDs, a world-first according to Lexus. In terms of size, the UX measures 4495mm long, 1840mm wide and 1520mm tall. It also has 2640mm wheelbase and a has a claimed best-in-class turning radius of 5.2 meters.

Inside, the UX features a sporty and sophisticated cabin design. The instrument panel is now fully-digital while the center dash features a large infotainment display that can be controlled via a touchpad. The leather upholstery used in the UX was inspired by Sashiko, a traditional Japanese quilting technique that is also used in making kendo and judo martial arts uniforms.

Powering the UX is a 2.0-liter gasoline-fed inline-four that is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). It can also be specified as a hybrid wherein it gets an electric motor that powers the rear wheels. With it, the Lexus UX 250h gets E-Four all-wheel drive and a total system output of 178 PS. Without the hybrid system, the small crossover is simply dubbed as the UX 200.

When it arrives, the Lexus UX will compete against the likes of the Audi Q2, BMW X2 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.
