2018 Suzuki Swift, Dzire take on the B-segment establishment

Suzuki has launched an all-out assault on the B-segment with the introduction of not one, but two all-new models for 2018. First previewed during this year’s Manila International Auto Show, the Dzire marks its official local launch; and alongside it, the all-new Swift which makes its debut in the country.

Starting with the Dzire, it slots below the Ciaz in terms of size and market positioning, aimed towards the budget-concsious end of the segment. It features a matured design for 2018 with its front fascia getting chrome finishing and more brightwork at the lower half of the bumper. Upswept headlights takes cues from the Swift but its bumper is different from its hatchback sibling. It also comes with bigger foglights as well.

The all-new Dzire looks more substantial than its predecessor thanks in part to a wider look, which comes courtesy of its curved, defined shoulder line. At the back, it carries over the short tail look from the old model but now comes with a steeper angle on its rear windshield.

Inside, the Dzire takes a more formal approach with rectangular shapes on the dashboard. To boost cabin ambience, it sees silver trimmings and faux plastic molded trimmings on the door panels. Depending on the model chosen, the Dzire can come with either a 2-DIN sound sytem or a touchscreen infotainment system. The former supports CD, USB, Aux and Bluetooth connectivity. The latter also benefits from those connectivity features (except for CD) and can be specified with navigation (dealer option). Audio is then routed through a four-speaker system.

Under the hood, the 2018 Dzire is powered by a 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine dubbed “K12M”. It produces 82 PS at 6000 rpm along with 113 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm. In the base model GL, the 1.2-liter engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. On the other hand, the top-spec GL+ gets a five-speed automated-manual transmission called ‘Auto Gear Shift’ (AGS). With it, the GL+ Dzire is poised to deliver a fun driving feel of a manual gearbox with the convenience of an automatic transmission.

In terms of safety, the Dzire will come with the following standard kit: anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), brake assist (BA), dual SRS airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, side impact beams, security alarm, immobilizer and rear parking sensors (GL+ only).

As for the Swift, the all-new model presents a bolder, but still evolutionary, redesign. Like the Dzire, it gets upswept headlights but the rest of the front fascia treatment is different. For starters, the grill is larger than its four-door counterpart and it ditches the chrome trimmings as well. There are slimmer air intakes too, and the corners of the bumper are rounded off to house unique fog light housings.

With its blacked-out pillars, the all-new Swift sticks to one of its design signatures and makes the hatch appear to have a floating roof. To give it a three-door look, the rear door handles have been moved by the window. Like the Dzire, it has the defined shoulder line but that’s where the similarities end. Its roof line sweeps downwards towards the back for a sportier, more dynamic look. At the back, uniquely shaped tail lights adorn the corners, along with a rounded off tailgate design.

Stepping inside the Swift, it has round air-conditioning vents while its center stack is tilted towards the driver. The flat-bottomed steering wheel gives the cabin a sportier ambiance, along with the accents on the dashboard. Like the Dzire, silver accents liven up the interior. The Swift comes in two variants, namely GL and GLX. Regardless of the model, a touchscreen is standard with the GL having a seven-inch monitor while the GLX gets upsized to eight inches.

Under the hood is the same mill as the Dzire. That means it’s a 1.2-liter unit that produces 82 PS and 113 Nm of torque – exactly the same as the Dzire. Depending on the variant, the all-new Swift can come with either a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission.

Safety features present on the 2018 Swift include: anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), brake assist (BA), dual SRS airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, side impact beams, security alarm and an immobilizer. Available only for the top-spec GLX are the rear parking sensors and reverse camera.
