Banned number plates: the new ’68’ car registration numbers axed by the DVLA

MY68 DCK, OR68 ASM, NO68 EAD and SH68 AGR are among the ’68 number plate combinations to have been banned by the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA).

Each March and September, when the number plate changes occur, the DVLA’s team gets together to work out which plates are too obviously – or subtly – rude to rest on motorists’ cars.

• The UK’s most expensive number plates

This year’s release is something of a bumper crop, with the number ‘6’ easily standing in for a ‘G’, and ‘8’ being interpretable as a ‘B’ – though active imaginations mean they could potentially stand in for any character, if you try hard enough.

Other banned plates include DO68 GER, BA68 TRD, BL68 JOB and CA68OMB, as the DVLA seeks to weed out combinations of characters that could suggest racism, sexism, homophobia and other potentially offensive or sensitive words.

These include perennially sensitive plates such as JE55 US, 15 LAM, OS55 AMA and even AD13 CTS. Combinations with a political or criminal angle such as EU68 BAD and MU68 GER, have been chopped, too – as well as anything ending in BNP. Any plates that include the words SEX, BUM or WNK are automatically excluded also.

No number plates are ever removed from the DVLA’s banned list, so usual suspects like VA61 ANA and CR16 PLE are still out of order. The DVLA also has the power to force drivers to hand back number plates if one is found to have slipped through the net. One example of this is the proud owner who paid £6,000 for ‘CU11 NNT’ earlier this year, only to find the DVLA ask for it back.

A DVLA spokesperson said people “enjoy” displaying personalised number plates, and drivers have over 50 million combinations to choose from with “prices starting at just £250”. The spokesperson cautioned, however: “The Agency holds back any combinations that may cause offence, embarrassment or are in poor taste.”

The DVLA makes an estimated £160 million each year from personalised plates.
